My husband and I spent a wonderful morning (9AM to 12 noon) touring the area around Estero Bay off Ft. Myers Beach. Christina, our naturalist, and Carl, our captain and historian, were great guides. We toured the waters and came upon a pod of dolphins who were swimming all around the boat. They were a delight to watch. Christina and Carl pointed out an osprey nest with male and female in residence. We stopped at Lovers Key State Park Beach and walked along the shore. Christina pointed out many different shells describing many interesting facts. We found a bottlehead shark that had washed up on shore and was unfortunately dead. We got to look at it closely and talk about its features. We saw a spotted sea ray swimming along the shore. I asked to go to Mound Key. It is an archeological site. The Calusa Indians made large mounds of shells on this key which are still there today. We were able to get off the pontoon and walk thru the island to the top of the mounds. It was fascinating to think about this group of people building these mounds around the time of Ponce de Leon (early 1500’s). We saw a turtle along the way and talked about the mangroves and how they grow. The 3 hours went quickly. On the way back to the marina we saw a bald eagle. It was a beautiful trip with friendly and knowledgeable guides. I would recommend it highly.
